Why a breeding centre

Stillriver Trout started with a simple problem: dam owners and fishing venues in the Highlands wanted healthy fingerlings close to home, from someone who would also tell them whether their water could hold trout at all. So the farm does both. It breeds the fish, and it gives the advice.

What happens on the farm

Eyed ova hatch in the hatchery building. The young fish move to raceways fed by cold spring water, and from there to grow-out ponds. Some leave as fingerlings for dams and venues. Some grow on to table size for kitchens in Mpumalanga and Gauteng, fresh or from our own smokehouse.

How we work

  • Fish are checked before every dispatch, and we say so in writing if a batch is not ready.
  • Every fingerling order comes with stocking advice for your dam, not just a delivery note.
  • We tell people when trout are the wrong fish for their water, even when it costs us the sale.
  • Trout stocking in South Africa is regulated. We help customers understand what applies to them, see stocking trout in dams.
